The River School History: A story of faith, sacrifice and miracles

The River School was founded in 1985 by a group of Christian parents who wanted to provide their children with a faith-based education. The school started out small, with just 35 students and a handful of teachers, but it has since grown into a thriving community.

The school's history is one of faith, sacrifice, and miracles. When the school was first founded, the founders had very little money. They were able to purchase the school's building, Oakfield House, for only £150,000 after an offer was accepted when the Trust had only £5 to its name. This was a miracle, and it showed that God was on the side of the school.

The school has also experienced many other miracles over the years. Staff and students have been healed of illnesses, and the school has been blessed with financial resources beyond its means. These miracles are a testament to the power of prayer and the faithfulness of God.

The River School is a place where students can learn and grow in a Christian environment. The school's curriculum is based on the Bible, and students are taught to think critically and to apply their faith to their everyday lives. The school also offers a variety of extracurricular activities, such as sports, music, and drama.

The River School is a special place, and its story is one of hope and inspiration. The school is a testament to the power of faith, and it is a place where students can grow in their relationship with God.

If you are looking for a school where your child can receive a quality education in a Christian environment, then The River School is the perfect place for you.

Site History

Oakfield House - with its 8 acres of stunning grounds - was established in 1825. The house was home to a succession of residents throughout the 19th century, and by the early 20th century, the site began to be used for education and training; with five different organisations calling it home throughout the years. From 1955 until 1984, Oakfield House was a horticultural college. Such was its reputation, that visitors from 56 nations around the world came to visit, some taking inspiration to start horticultural colleges in their homelands.

The Worcester Christian Education Trust has owned and run The River School at the site since 1985. The study and stewardship of God’s creation has always been pertinent across the curriculum, and throughout school life.

Since 2015 work has been carried out to renovate the gardens that some have dubbed ‘Worcester’s Heligan’. The story of its development has been lovingly captured in photos over the years, and we continute with an ongoing strategy to care for and develop the site. From the walled gardens, orchards and long borders, through the Forest School and pond; there is a wide range of flora and fauna, high status trees and shrubs, with new specimens being re-discovered all the time. We are delighted to be part of the National Garden Scheme, enabling more people to come and enjoy our beautiful gardens and grounds.

The River School is a place where children are known, loved, and encouraged to grow in every way. Our life together is shaped by the example of Jesus - His compassion, His joy, and His deep care for every individual. This creates a wonderfully nurturing environment where pupils flourish academically, personally, and spiritually.

Set within more than eight acres of beautiful grounds, our school offers children something truly special: space to breathe, space to explore, and space to grow. From our orchard and gardens to our Forest School, pond, and much‑loved animals, our environment is alive with opportunities for curiosity, creativity, and hands‑on learning.

Whether your child is just beginning their journey in Brook Nursery, stepping into the adventure of Primary, or growing in confidence through our Senior School, we are committed to providing an education that nurtures the whole child - mind, body, and spirit.
