Myths, Magic, and Muddy Boots: Creating Our School’s Garden of Arthur

A winning Design

We are delighted to introduce a blog series by Alex, one of our Year 9 students. His passion for gardening inspired him to establish our Senior Gardening Club, and last June he submitted a formal proposal to senior staff for the school to enter the School Garden Event at Malvern.

Alex's enthusiasm has been the driving force behind this entire project. read all about it below.

In the summer, I put forward a proposal to the school to create a school garden for the Malvern Spring Festival. I’ve visited the show for a number of years with my family and, more recently, have started competing in the Grow to Show competition there. I thought that designing a school garden would be fun for everyone involved. I really enjoy gardening and, back in Year 7, I started the seniors’ gardening club to share that joy with others. When Mrs Ellin started as Head Teacher in September, she said she liked the idea of my proposal and supported entering the schools’ garden competition.

When the time came to choose the garden theme and submit it to the show, we found out the theme was Myths and Legends. The gardening club and I chose King Arthur as our inspiration. With this theme, we decided on the (admittedly rather unexciting!) name Garden of Arthur.

To create the design, we ran a competition in Primary, and the winning entries would be incorporated into the final layout. Well done to Josephine (Years 1 and 2) and Sharron (Years 5 and 6) for winning the competition—here are their designs:

This was the starting point for our overall design. In my next blog post, I’ll show you how we combined these ideas and developed them into the final garden plan. The Spring Show takes place from the 7th to the 10th of may…watch this space"!
