Statement

Worcester Christian Education Trust Statement

Earlier this week Mark Baker, a former teacher, was sentenced for non-recent abuse carried out in the school in the 1990s. We were deeply appalled and saddened to hear of this abuse, and welcome the fact that justice was pursued and he has received his sentence.

First and foremost, I want to express my deepest sympathy to the victim in this case, who has shown great courage in speaking up. No child should ever experience harm in a place where they should feel safe, supported and cared for. I recognise the pain and lasting impact that abuse causes and am truly sorry that the victim has experienced this. Their voice matters, and we commend their bravery. On behalf of the school, I want to sincerely apologise that this abuse was perpetrated by a former teacher at our school.

Two years ago, the school released a public statement inviting any individuals that had safeguarding concerns, either historically or presently, to come forward. As a result of this statement, further historic concerns were disclosed and immediately passed on to the local authority and police.

Continuing in our desire to see any abuse come to light, the Trustees and I have commissioned a Specialist Helpline through the independent safeguarding charity Thirtyone:eight for anyone who has experienced abuse through The River School. This could include physical, sexual, emotional or spiritual abuse. This helpline is free, confidential and impartial. To access this helpline please call 0303-003-1111, option 2, option 5, quoting 'River'.

Since my recent appointment as Head Teacher, I have been impressed by the caring and professional culture of The River School, and by our current safeguarding procedures which are of the highest standard. Out latest ISI inspection praised our safeguarding, noting that the culture of safeguarding is embedded in the school. As we move forwards, I am committed to learning from the past, and to leading the school in its endeavour to provide a wonderful, Jesus-shaped education, where students flourish and embrace life to the full.

Mrs Emma Ellin

Headteacher of The River School
